Phase 1 of the project moves forward in Agotové: construction of 4 ECOSAN ecological latrines

La phase 1 du projet avance à Agotové : construction de 4 latrines écologiques ECOSAN

Before setting up our autonomous drinking water generator system, a number of preliminary steps are essential, such as hygiene awareness-raising by OPED Togo, and the construction of dry toilets, which play a vital role for these populations.

Many homes and neighborhoods have no toilets, forcing residents to go out into the open during the day or night, in complete insecurity, or to dig holes near their homes, with all the attendant hygiene and environmental problems. Improving access to adequate sanitary facilities is a question of public health and human dignity, but also an essential contribution to preserving the local environment.

3 major impacts of ECOSAN ecological latrine construction on daily life

✅ Disease prevention: Latrines reduce the spread of water-related diseases, improving community health.

🌱 Respect for the environment: By avoiding contamination of soil and water sources, latrines help preserve biodiversity and the ecosystem.

👧📚 Empowerment: By providing safe, private spaces, latrines empower women and girls, encouraging access to education. In schools, young girls are particularly affected by the lack of latrine facilities. They are often embarrassed to use the toilet in the presence of their peers. When they start menstruating for the first time, this embarrassment can be so intense that some pupils decide to leave school.

Investing in health infrastructure in Agotové goes beyond physical health, it's a commitment to a more equitable, sustainable and prosperous future.
